What to Watch in September

“The Conjuring: Last Rites”

“Preparation For The Next Life”

Adapted from the novel by Atticus Lish, “Preparation for the Next Life” follows undocumented immigrant Zou Lei as she tries to build a new life in the U.S. while avoiding deportation. Skinner is a scarred veteran struggling to find his place in a country that claims to support him. When they meet in a stairwell, they connect over their shared sense of need and navigate the tough streets of the city together.

Directed by Bing Liu and featuring actors Sebiye Behtiyar, Michelle Mao, and Eddie Yu, this film is playing in select theaters starting Sept. 5.

“Tempest”

“Rabbit Trap”

Married musicians Daphne (portrayed by Rosy McEwen) and Darcy (portrayed by Dev Patel) move to the Welsh countryside to finish their new record. While collecting audio samples, Darcy inadvertently records a mysterious sound never before heard, disturbing ancient and malevolent woodland forces. One day, a stranger arrives on their doorstep, and the line between reality and myth begins to blur.

Starring Dev Patel, this movie opens in theaters on Sept. 12.

“Waltzing with Brando”

“My Sunshine”

On a Japanese island, life revolves around the changing seasons. Winter is time for ice hockey at school, but Takuya isn’t too thrilled about it. His real interest lies in Sakura, a rising figure skating star from Tokyo, for whom he starts to develop a genuine fascination. Coach and former champion Arakawa spots potential in Takuya, and decides to mentor him to form a duo with Sakura for an upcoming competition. As winter persists, feelings grow, and the two children form a harmonious bond. 

Catch Sosuke Ikematsu, Keitatsu Koshiyama, Ryûya Wakaba, and Kiara Takanashi in this award-winning Japanese film being released in limited theaters on Sept. 19.

“The Ugly”

One day while overseeing a documentary crew filming his blind father at work, Im Dong-hwan gets a phone call that his missing mother’s remains have been found after 40 years. Determined to find the truth of her disappearance, Dong-hwan embarks on a twisted odyssey through his family’s traumatic past, uncovering dark secrets along the way. 

From director Yeon Sang-ho (“Train to Busan”), the movie stars Park Jeong-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Im Sung-jae, Shin Hyun-been, and Han Ji-hyeon. Watch the movie in theaters starting Sept. 19.

“Slow Horses” Season 5

In Season 5 of “Slow Horses,” everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) has a glamorous new girlfriend. But when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected. After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules — cover your back — always apply.

“Alice in Borderland” Season 3

“The Red King”

As Grace digs deeper, the island’s eerie past begins to unravel: whispers of a secretive religious sect founded by an enigmatic leader, strange rituals, and a string of unexplained deaths. 

Starring Anjli Mohindra and featuring Tuyen Do, the AMC+ series can be streamed on Sept. 25.
