Melissa de la Cruz’s “When Stars Align” Explores Fame, Friendship, and Second Chances

Bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz draws from early 2000s icons in her latest novel about former girl group members rebuilding their lives after fame.

Set in a world of pop glam and celebrity gossip, New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz’s new novel “When Stars Align” follows three girls who were once part of this high society and their journeys afterward. Inspired by the pop scene of the late ‘90s/early 2000s, de la Cruz brings to life the highs and lows of three former band members in that period. The book follows them as they rebuild their lives, learn to walk away from familial expectations, and lean on each other for friendship. It delves into finding the courage to build your own path when things fall apart and remembering to keep friendships close by.

Miranda Montana, Sicily Bell, and Germaine St. Germaine-Chang are former members of the infamous girl group, 3AM Girls. They were once on top of the world and their every move and detail was printed on gossip columns. We follow each of their journeys as they navigate life after leaving the glitzy pop world.

In the aftermath of their disbandment, Miranda, wild child of the group, starts to slowly rebuild her life after rehab. Sicily creates a successful pop solo career and finds herself in the middle of the dark side of mixing business and family. Germaine returns to work for her family business and looks to find her own creative path in life.

De la Cruz, who is best known for her Blue Bloods series, Descendants series based on the Disney Channel films, and Witches of East End series, which were turned into a two-season drama series on Lifetime Television, spoke to me about her latest release. We discussed breaking free from familial expectations, keeping friendships close, and rebuilding yourself when life breaks you down.

Inspired by 90s Pop Culture

Bringing to life the stories of three former pop stars, de la Cruz pulled inspiration from her journalism experience and a recent conversation with her daughter.

“I remember meeting Paris and Nikki Hilton when they were 17 and 15, and I was a reporter for Harper’s Bazaar, and just thinking ‘Oh my God, these kids are so wild.’ But not just wild. I was struck by how old they were at such a young age. They were like these teenagers, but they almost felt like they were 25, almost like they were just so jaded and old, just so sure of themselves at that age. So that always struck me,” she reminisced.

The need to grow up quickly in the spotlight is reflected in flashbacks of when the women were still in 3AM Girls. As teenagers, they bonded while dressing up to head out to nightclubs and having disturbing encounters with older men.

In the early 2000s, it wasn’t uncommon to see headlines in magazines and entertainment shows that thrived on rumors and gossip around women celebrities and their downfalls. Nowadays, with the “Me Too” movement and the demand for more female empowerment, there’s a desire for women to uplift each other rather than bring each other down.

A conversation with her daughter helped de la Cruz reframe her thoughts on these high-profile female celebrities who were painted in an awful light in the early 2000s.

“My daughter, who’s 18 — I think Paris was in the news for something — and she said something like, ‘Oh, Paris is a queen.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, really? You think that? You know my generation, we thought they were entertaining, but we didn’t look up to them,’” shared the author, who was intrigued by the evolution of these celebrities’ reputations.

“What inspired the book, actually, was this kind of reversal of how the culture has started to see these women like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan, who are kind of the inspiration for the characters in the book. The treatment of women has been very different back in the 2000s [compared] to now, which is a good thing. And now we realize how terribly the media treated them and how they were portrayed.”

Rebuilding After Setbacks

“When Stars Align” asks what happens when life knocks you down — does one find the courage to build themselves back up? For example, Miranda perseveres, even when she is betrayed or hits rock bottom.

When Miranda finds herself back in Hollywood, acting in smaller roles and trying to network her way back into the limelight, it’s not long before she’s reminded of the toxic and dark parts of Hollywood. She eventually finds herself in destructive relationships, and the alcohol and drug influences around her pull her back into her old ways. However, we find her years later after finally finding a rhythm that suits her.

Coming Together in Friendships

While we follow the journey of these three characters over the course of two decades as they experience tremendous changes and pain, there is one constant: their friendship. Every time chaos comes into their lives, their first instinct is to turn to each other.

For instance, when Sicily’s second pregnancy is announced in the media, Miranda’s first instinct is to check in on her. And when Sicily is placed in a conservatorship, Miranda and Germaine are the first people to bring attention to the issue by using the “SilentSicily” hashtag and offering financial assistance to her if she needs it.

Although the stories are filled with constant challenges and chaos of the women’s lives, their friendship is always at the forefront. When there’s tension, the women find resolution through hard conversations, and they find a way back to each other. Whether it is a text or call or actual face-to-face visit, their presence in each other’s lives is always made known.

Breaking Free from Expectations

Having lived in the spotlight and shouldering expectations from either family or outside influences, the pressures of life can be too much. We see the women live in the bubble of the standards they’ve placed on themselves or others have placed on them. We slowly watch them come to realizations through personal growth and trial and error to break free and own their life experiences.

Miranda finds herself fulfilled with owning a beach club but also feels loneliness. With her fair share of terrible relationships, she almost gives up on finding partnership and believes perhaps she’s destined to be single. It’s not until a chance encounter with an ex-boyfriend from her teenage years that she considers there’s a chance for romance in her future.

Germaine comes from a wealthy, traditional Vietnamese family. After leaving 3AM, she works for her family’s business, but craves to break out on her own and pursue her passion for dancing. Her family is fed up with Germaine’s dreams and demands she settle down and stay in the family business.

Torn between wanting to be a creative but also to reap a life of luxury, Germaine has to decide whether she will find her own path or do as her family says.

When writing these stories, de la Cruz tried to pull inspiration from her life. Although she can’t claim her younger self was completely like Germaine’s life, “She definitely is the one Asian character I think I felt much closer to, and her troubles. But I love all three of them, of course.”
