If you’ve ever worked a dead-end job where the only joy in your life is torturing your co-workers by day and moonlighting in a rock band at night, you know what it’s like to be Lester Patel on “Chuck.” The show centers around Buy More employee Chuck (played by Zach Levi) who is recruited by the FBI to work as a spy. When we left the show last season, their beloved Buy More electronics store had burnt down, Lester and co-worker Jeff were on the run for being potential suspects, and Chuck’s father was unfortunately killed. We got the man who plays Lester, Canadian actor Vik Sahay, to spill the beans on the upcoming season four, which starts tonight.
How would you describe “Chuck” to someone who’s never seen the show?
It takes you back to high school, no matter when you went. It combines the most irritating elements of your mundane workday world with the zaniest, most ego-centric fantasies you’ve ever had.
What can we look forward to from the Buy More team in the upcoming season?
Well, we’re going to see how they deal with their beloved/loathed Buy More being burned down. And I guess the cat is out of the bag about Linda Hamilton [playing Chuck’s long-lost mother]. Chuck’s journey will be centered around his mother. I can’t wait to see where that leads.
How has Lester developed as a character on “Chuck?”
I think he has moved beyond being a total jack-ass. You can’t dismiss him. He may not be the sweetest guy on the block, but you want him at your party. He brings the jagged edge we all need to stay alive.
Do you and Jeff [played by Scott Krinsky] work off of each other?
Totally. It’s like a weathered marriage…for better or worse. There’s trust, I feel like I can try anything.
Will we ever get to see a love interest for Lester?
I would love that. I need that. A Mrs. Robinson kind of situation. A lover and a parent in one. Someone like Marcia Gay Harden…I can just hear her saying my name: “Oh, Lester, come over here you little jerk.”
What is your favorite part of working on “Chuck?”
The cast. I am truly blessed to be part of this beautiful tribe of goons.
Describe the upcoming season of “Chuck” in three words.
Zany, searching, kick-ass.
If you don’t already watch this show, about a spy with a heart of gold, make sure to tune in tonight at 8/7 p.m. central on NBC.
