Last Thursday night’s “American Idol” results show was probably the biggest nail-biter of them all. With 12 coveted spots at stake, drama was at an all-time high as the top 16 waited to hear their fates. In one of the most controversial and unforgiving cuts of the season, America chose to send home a talented bunch of contestants, including Alex Lambert, Lilly Scott, Todrick Hall and Katelyn Epperly. That means that one of our favorite contestants, Andrew Garcia, just managed to slip into the top 12.
Let’s be frank: Andrew wasn’t a shoo-in to garner a top 12 spot, and he was definitely in danger of going home after his recent performances. His latest acoustic take of Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle” on Wednesday, while creative, failed to truly grab my attention or produce the kind of “wow” factor that both the judges and America have been craving for the past few weeks. I even found myself nodding as Simon Cowell told Andrew, “That almost seemed desperate.”
Most people can agree that Alex, Lilly, Todrick and Katelyn were deserving of another week on “American Idol.” While they each had their off-days, Lilly was a pretty consistent performer and Alex was even considered to be a dark horse for the Idol crown. Andrew should feel grateful that he is given yet another chance to prove himself as an artist and performer. I think he should relax and instead go with what has worked for him before: what about choosing a song by Maroon 5 or Jason Mraz, whose songs fits his style perfectly? All we can say now is good luck this week Andrew–don’t try too hard, be yourself, and everything else should come naturally.
