After Andrew Garcia’s past few performances and song-choice letdowns on “American Idol,” I was beginning to run out of hope. Deep down, I knew that he had the potential and just needed the right song and moment to break loose. However, after so many weeks of sub-par performances, where he failed to live up to his early season-high rendition of “Straight Up” (which the judges reminded us about far too many times), I could only cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Imagine my relief and joy when Andrew performed a silky-smooth acoustic rendition of Chris Brown’s “Forever.”
What a difference the right song choice makes! With his spot-on, soulful singing, melodic strumming of his guitar, and use of understated but masterful vocal riffs, Andrew stamped himself back into the competition as a viable competitor with his cover of the popular R&B tune. This performance is definitely worth re-watching (on YouTube here), and not to mention, Andrew looked particularly sharp in his plaid shirt and fitted gray suit.
On a more serious note, female crooner Didi Benami was voted off yesterday night. While she may not have been a front-runner in the competition, what I liked about her was the humility, individuality and purity she infused into her vocals. Good luck in your future endeavors, Didi!
Tune in next week to see the Top 9 take on the Lennon-McCartney songbook, with Rihanna as a guest performer.
*Correction: Early this afternoon, the blog originally stated that next week’s theme will be iTunes’ Top 100 songs, which is incorrect.
