What to Watch in August
We’re finishing off summer with a lineup of films and series highlighting fantastical battles, family crises, and characters that wrestle with belonging, justice, and empowerment.

“The Bad Guys 2”

“Eyes of Wakanda”

In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes must carry out dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts from the enemies of Wakanda. They are the Hatut Zaraze and this is their story.
Featuring the voice talent of Jona Xiao as Iron Fist, this animated series can be streamed on Disney+ starting Aug. 1.
“TURA!”

“TURA!” is the authorized documentary from filmmaker Cody Jarrett on Asian American cinema pioneer Tura Satana, star of the Russ Meyer classic “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” Narrated by Margaret Cho (who is also an executive producer) and featuring interviews with John Waters, Dita Von Teese, Pamela Des Barres, and more, “TURA!” is a thrilling, heartfelt look into the life of a woman who beat all the odds to become a burlesque superstar, cult movie icon, and enduring role model for female empowerment whose life and body of work continue to impact the world today.
Executive produced and narrated by Margaret Cho, the documentary also features experts like Nancy Wang Yuen. Watch in theaters through limited release starting Aug. 1.
“Site”

Neil experiences an inexplicable time distortion in an abandoned military test site while inspecting it with his business partner Garrison. Soon, Neil is having repeated traumatic flashes back to a WWII prison camp in China called Unit 731, which somehow holds the thread to his own unraveling present. Neil begins to realize that the past lives and events in this place of unspeakable brutality seem to mirror his own trauma with his son Wiley and his wife Elena. Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist.

“Freakier Friday”

“Freakier Friday,” a sequel to 2003’s “Freaky Friday,” stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman. The story picks up years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

“Butterfly”

Executive produced by and starring Daniel Dae Kim, the Prime Video limited series features Reina Hardesty, Kim Ji-hoon, Kim Tae-hee, Sung Dong-il, Lee Il-hwa, Sean Dulake, and Seoyeon Jang. Start streaming Aug. 13.
“Night Always Comes”

“The Knife”

“Primitive War”

Based on the novel “Primitive War” by Ethan Pettus, this movie, starring Ana Thu Nguyen, is in theaters starting Aug. 21.
“Ne Zha 2”

A rebellious young boy, Ne Zha, is feared by the gods and born to mortal parents with wild, uncontrolled powers. Now that he’s faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity, he must grow up to become the hero the world needs.
Featuring the voices of Academy Award–winning actor Michelle Yeoh, Crystal Lee, and Vincent Rodriguez III, the re-release of “Ne Zha 2” will open in theaters Aug. 22.
“Eenie Meanie”

The irreverent high-speed thriller follows a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a previous employer offers her the chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.
Premiering on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, this film stars Randall Park and Phuong Kubacki and will be released on Aug. 22.
“Invasion” Season 3

“Invasion” follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. In Season 3, those perspectives collide for the first time, as the series’ main characters are brought together to work as a team on a critical mission to infiltrate the alien mothership. It will take all heroes working together, using their experience and expertise, to save the species. Featuring returning cast member Shioli Kutsuna, the 10-episode third season will return Aug. 22 on Apple TV+ with one episode, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday through Oct. 24.
