This past Saturday, I had the chance to attend “The Main Event,” a hip-hop competition featuring the best dance crews from the east coast. Hosted by “America’s Best Dance Crew” Season Four’s FR3SH Dance Troupe, the event drew over 500 dancers in 25 participating crews and more than 1,200 attendees in the area. New Jersey’s Union County Performing Center was jam-packed with star-studded talent.

First place went to Capital Funk, a Washington, D.C.-based dance crew that managed to form a human version of a claw crane vending machine game. They took home a $1,500 check and a new Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera. Second and third place winners were Static Noyze and Rhythmology, respectively, and they took home trophies and new Samsung cell phones.

Karla Garcia of “So You Think You Can Dance” hosted alongside Alonzo Williams of ABDC’s Rhythm City. MTV veterans Fanny Pak, Kaba Modern Legacy, Rhythm City and FR3SH also performed exhibition sets.

“At the end of the day, we still have to remain humble, focused and grateful for these opportunities,” said Williams. Bronx-based Rhythm City will be sending 16 members of their team to China this summer to perform multiple shows at the 2010 Shanghai Expo – an unbelievable and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

As dance shows become more mainstream with productions like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars,” many crews are able to turn their love of dancing into careers and businesses. Fanny Pak recently launched their own sneaker line and Kaba Modern Legacy members have danced alongside Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Britney Spears in concert tours.

“It’s all about balance though,” explained Eric Calvario of Kaba Modern Legacy. “We want to inspire young dancers and show them that it’s possible to pursue dance and a professional career/go to college.” Calvario, who went to undergrad at UC Irvine and grad school at USC, pursues his passion in occupational therapy along dancing professionally.
