According to the Sichuan-based “West China Metropolis Daily,” a 14-year-old boy drank gasoline for the past five years in order to become like his TV heroes, “Bumble Bee” and “Optimus Prime” in the “Transformers” animated TV series.
Just one question: WHY? Why would you do that? I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to laugh or feel bad for the boy when I read this. If he were five years old, I would’ve sympathized for the kid. Even I remember desperately wanting to be a real-life Sailor Moon (“Moon Prism Power!”) around that age. But when you’re drinking gasoline from the age of nine to fourteen, it’s a bit sad that you’re unable to tell apart reality from fantasy.
His parents describe how he started drinking gasoline when he found out he liked smelling lighter fuel. A small taste turned into a full-grown addiction. His father describes, “But afterwards we found our motorcycle’s gasoline was always disappearing, and one day when we found the boy had drunk a half bottle of gasoline stolen from the motorcycle, we were too shocked to say anything.”
Even after his parents locked away the motorcycle, he began stealing gasoline from his neighbors, drinking two to three bottles at a time. When his parents took him to the hospital, they were told the lead from the gasoline had caused serious damage in his brain and body. No kidding. I can’t believe he got away with it for five years.
His father told the paper, “Before that, he was a very smart boy, and he could even repair the television. But now he does not know the answer of 7 plus 17.”
It’s too bad he didn’t just develop an innocent adolescent crush on Megan Fox like the rest of the boys.
