Pinkberry's Newest Flavor: Salted Caramel

What do you do when summer is here and you are feeling the heat? Eat frozen yogurt! Pinkberry, the store that began our current generation’s fascination with “froyo” in 2006 has introduced a new summer flavor, salted caramel. I admit I have a bias here, not to the flavor, but to Pinkberry itself; I have been a huge fan since the days when they first opened in West Hollywood. Yes, there are a lot of other new frozen yogurt competitors out there, some of which do give Pinkberry a run for its money (i.e. Yogurtland, Red Mango, to name a few), but there’s something about the tartness and simplicity of Pinkberry’s usual three or four flavors that attract me more than the other stores’ do.

Salted caramel is slightly heavier and sweeter than their regular flavors. However, if you’re a fan of caramel, you’ll love this. There’s just enough saltiness to it to give the froyo a little extra kick, thus not overwhelming the taste buds with too much sweetness, as caramel sometimes does. Overall, it was enjoyable, but since I’m personally not a huge fan of caramel in general, I’ll probably stick with my favorite, pomegranate, the next time I head over. Plus, I’m not sure if it was just the branch I was at (Prudential center in Boston), but the flavor melted fairly quickly, so even the picture I took looks slightly runny. Then again, that is more likely a product of Boston’s summer heat than anything else.

In any case, if you’re feeling adventurous this summer with your taste buds, go try a sample of salted caramel at your nearest Pinkberry, and tell us if you like it! For those craving some familiarity, seasonal watermelon should also be back in stores by mid-June.
