NYC's Momoko Offers a Healthier Asian Twist to Your Favorite French Desserts
If you could have the bold flavors of Asia meet the exquisite presentation of French treats, it would be at Momoko, a dessert and tea catering service based in New York City. With mouthwatering confections like Indian Summer, a tart made with Darjeeling ganache and chantilly cream nougatine, and Original Caramel Miso and Tokyo Wasabi macarons, these are the sweets pastry chefs dreamt up when they traveled to Asia. Momoko's founders Junko Wu and Fennie Chan were both working at different marketing companies in New York City before they got together through friends and decided to launch a business around the things they love most: desserts and Asian teas. Within a year, Wu and Chan launched Momoko and started working with pastry chefs to bake up their vision.
Wu says, "We met through a friend, and we were both interested in promoting Asian herbs and teas at the time. We got along very quickly and decided to create our own desserts."
But unlike Momoko's Asian-inspired treats, Wu says 99 percent of the desserts in Japan are artificial. All their desserts are handmade and are free of GMOs and artificial additives and coloring.
Their herbal tea offering falls in line with their philosophy of feeding your body with the best ingredients. Whether it's mitigating a headache or soothing PMS symptoms, drinking tea has always been an important part of Asian culture in treating health conditions holistically. Wu and Chan wanted to introduce this concept stateside through their emphasis of enjoying the drink with dessert.
"A lot of countries in Asia use special herbs to help people maintain their bodies and health. Many Asian women drink tea during their period to help ease symptoms," Wu says.
Momoko offers a variety of tea collections, including the Chi Workout, which has Dragon Dance, a hawthorn berry tea packed with antioxidants and flavonoids and has a tart flavor. Java lovers will like the Evening Zen tea collection, which has Houjicha Calm, a tea made from roasted Japanese sencha leaves and mimics the taste of coffee without the extra caffeine.
