Makeup Monday: Longer Lashes and Skincare Talk

September-16.png

Although NYFW is over, we’re still admiring our favorite looks and soaking up as much as we can from the fashion-packed week. But it’s time to move onto the here and now. This week, I’m experimenting with deep eggplant and rich navy eyeliners—they’re so dark that I’m not too far outside my comfort zone, but they’re not as severe as black and add interest to my eye. Plus, the darker shades feel festive for fall. My favorites (at least for the moment) are Smashbox’s Always Sharp Kohl Liner in French Navy ($20) and Too Faced’s Perfect Water Proof Liner in Black Orchid ($18). NYFW Wraps Up

NYFW wrapped up last Thursday but the beauty inspiration doesn’t end there. We’ve compiled our favorite NYFW beauty looks here [link to slideshow] to refer back to when we’re stuck in a beauty rut. And NYFW model Liu Win shares her secrets to flawless skin (like daily cleansing—even when exhausted) with Elle. While we may not be glamorous fashion models, her secrets are simple enough for anyone to adopt.

Whiteness Is Not Just Skin Deep

Skin whitening is big in Asia and Get the Gloss’s Ayesha Muttucumaru wrote a thought-provoking reflection on the promotion of fair skin in Asian countries, like her  homeland, Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, the western beauty ideal that has spilled into Asia connotes not just beauty, but also success and wealth. The “casual racism,” as Muttucumaru terms it, is definitely something to think about.

Lifestyle-Protecting Skincare

Shiseido recently launched a line of skincare products, specially targeted towards young adults. The new Ibuki line was designed to defend the skin against damaging lifestyle problems—like constant stress, inadequate sleep, or skipping meals—that are unique to our generation. Use Shiseido’s helpful Ready for Anything tool to identify the best matches to combat your external stressors and skin concerns. Still skeptical? Take a closer look at the purpose and benefits of the seven products on The Sephora Glossy’s breakdown of the collection. It’s amazing how a couple of skincare products can repair and prevent damage—something your future self will thank you for.

Bat Those Eyelashes

Thick lashes are essential for accentuating the eyes but can be difficult to achieve. Chick RX has some recommendations to help you lengthen and thicken your lashes. While the obvious solution would be finding a killer mascara or faking it with falsies, eating well and taking care of your lashes (to prevent shedding) can be key to enhancing thickness. Of course, there are other options like lash extensions or prescription treatments (ie: Latisse), but I’ll stick to removing my makeup, replacing my mascara, and eating right—things I should be doing anyway—to thicken my lashes. How far would you go for longer, thicker lashes?
