Maggie Q to Star in The CW's 'Nikita' Remake
In “Mission Impossible III,” Asian American actress Maggie Q played top agent Zhen Lei, a member of Ethan Hunt’s elite team. In “Live Free or Die Hard,” she played Mai Linh, a villain who creates a temporary power outage at the FBI Cyber-Security Division after gleaning coded computer programs from a group of hackers. As successful as her career has been in recent years, Maggie Q has yet to play a leading role in any of the film or television projects she has taken on. All of this is likely to change, as the actress has just recently landed the title role in “Nikita,” a fall TV show picked up by the CW.
The show is a spinoff of the original 1990 French action film, "La Femme Nikita," directed by Luc Besson and starring Anne Parillaud. Though the movie received mostly poor reviews, its female protagonist–a young drug addict who is trained to work as a top-secret assassin–became so memorable a character that it spawned a remake only three years later, titled "Point of No Return," starring Bridget Fonda as the steely femme fatale. In 1997, an action-drama TV series titled “La Femme Nikita” premiered in Canada, garnering praise from critics and becoming one of the top dramas watched on USA Network in its first two seasons.
Maggie Q, who is of Vietnamese, French Canadian, Polish and Irish descent, is far from inexperienced for this role, having starred in her share of action films in the past, from blockbuster franchises like “Mission Impossible” to historical dramas like “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon.” We look forward to seeing how she holds up in her first leading role.
“Nikita” will premiere on Sept. 30, 2010. Catch the show on Thursdays at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central. For an exclusive look at Maggie Q’s electrifying performance as “Nikita,” check out this clip below:
