Congrats to Edward Wang, Drafted to Buffalo Bills

We recently blogged about left tackle Edward Wang from Virginia Tech who sought, at the time, to be the first Chinese American football player ever to get picked during the NFL Draft. Today, we have even better news. Wang’s hard work has paid off, and on Saturday, he was drafted to join the Buffalo Bills team as an offensive tackle. As the 140th overall pick, Wang was finally drafted in the fifth round, though this event is nothing short of historic. The somewhat-affectionately nicknamed "Godzilla" is the first Chinese American to be drafted in the NFL, and has overcome so many racial hurdles and opened the doors for more Asian Americans to follow in his footsteps.

His success comes as no surprise. After all, he is not only a naturally hard worker, but also the son of two Olympians. His father was a high jumper and his mother was formerly a hurdler. And at 250 pounds and 6’5 tall, Wang is far from being under-qualified for his blocker position.

On being the first Chinese American NFL draft, he says, “You know, it’s really important to me. It means a lot to me to be the first one to do it. I take a lot of pride in that.”

Doug Majeski, Buffalo’s Coordinator of College Scouting, was impressed by Wang’s transition from tight end to tackle. Majeski says, “He’s been a three-year starter at Virginia Tech. He’s got size. He’s got strength. He’s really a good athlete as far as his quickness and body control. He’s gotten better each year, and we hope he still continues to improve for us. He plays well on his feet and he can run. He’s physical and he’s quick.”

Wang is super enthusiastic about advancing to the next professional level, and his healthy self-confidence reveals this. He says, “I definitely feel comfortable because I feel I am pretty athletic. I feel like I can improve upon everything. I feel like I have a lot of room to grow in my game. That’s what I’m really excited about, getting there, having them develop me more, just getting ready to go.”

Now that Wang has been drafted, we’re confident there’s no stopping him either. After all, he’s already made Asian American history!
