Anna Sui's Gossip Girl-Inspired Line for Target Coming Soon

Anna SuiAnna Sui has brought everything from sportswear to fragrances to the world of fashion, but her latest venture may be one of the most exciting yet: Gossip Girl-inspired pieces at non-Upper West Side prices. Sui is the second designer (after Alexander McQueen) to participate in Target’s Designer Collaborations progam, which aims to bring established designers to the public at affordable prices.

Designer Collaborations is separate from Target’s GO International line that focuses on emerging designers. The main difference is that Designer Collaborations participants must take inspiration from "a collaborative partner, muse or creative element."

While the collection designed by the notoriously avant-garde McQueen was inspired by the rock ‘n roll aesthetic, Sui’s line is inspired by only one of the biggest TV shows of recent history: Gossip Girl.

"When I was in Asia last year, girls kept asking me about the different areas in New York City by referring to them as where the characters from "Gossip Girl" live," said Sui in a Target press release. "The show is such a phenomenon and so fashionable, so I really wanted to create a collection reflective of the four main characters."

Anna Sui Backstage Spring 09The looks in her collection are both inspired and organized by character, with different outfits representing Blair, Serena, Jenny and Vanessa. The line offers dresses, blouses and skirts, but with typical Sui flair — such as a big bow on a high collar (Blair, of course) and a plunging V-neck dress with metallic accents (Serena). Her Target collection is only the latest of Sui’s long line of achievements. Raised in Detroit and educated at Parsons the New School for Design, Sui has been a staple of the fashion industry ever since she launched her sportswear line in 1980. Her client list boasts celebrity names such as Naomi Campbell and Sofia Coppola, and earlier this year she won a CFDA (Council of Fashion designers of America) Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. On top of that, Sui even has a Barbie Doll designed after her.

Anna Sui meets Gossip Girl meets prices starting at $19.99: what more could we ask for? The collection launches Sept. 13, just in time for the Sept. 14 debut of the third season of Gossip Girl.
