2-Minute Hair

Two-minute hair—need we say more? Whether you've overslept or just want to save some time, here are our tips for flawless hair every day, with help from hairstylist James Feng. Hair Prep Healthy, beautiful hair starts in the shower. Use a strengthening shampoo like Tresemme Platinum Strength Strengthening Shampoo ($5.79) and conditioner ($5.79) to strengthen your strands. “Be careful to not to lather throughout the ends, only at the scalp,” advises hairstylist James Feng of Cutler Salon. Since oil generates at the scalp and travels down the shaft, shampooing below mid-shaft can deplete the natural oils, leading to dry and frizzy hair. But be sure to take an extra minute to massage conditioner into your ends, which tend to be the most dry and damaged. After you shower, keep your hair soft and shiny by rubbing a dime-sized amount of Carol’s Daughter Lisa’s Hair Elixir ($20) in your hands and applying to your whole head, again, focusing on the ends. As a bonus, the elixir doubles as a deep conditioning treatment—just apply the product throughout your head for five minutes and rinse out.

Pump Up the Volume While it may be beautiful, the sleek and straight hair that many Asians have comes with its own challenges. “I find that the biggest challenge with Asian hair is getting it to have full volume and movement that lasts throughout the day,” says Feng. Even if you’re not planning to blow dry your hair, don’t skip the volumizing spray. Spray a generous amount of TIGI’s Bed Head Superstar Queen for a Day Thickening Spray (16.50) all over damp hair, which weightlessly thickens strands and lifts roots for all day volume. For even more lift, apply Blow Pro’s Blow Up Root Lift Concentrate ($21) where needed (pull strands at the crown away from your face and spray towards the roots). Ensure your hair stays voluminous with Living Proof's Flexible Hold Hairspray ($24), which is strong but flexible for natural all-day hold.

Tousled and Textured If you have a little extra time after volumizing your hair, add some texture. For a sexy, messy look, rub a pea-sized amount of L’Oreal’s EverStyle Tousle Crème ($6.99) between your hands and distribute it throughout your hair, scrunching as you go. Then flip your hair over and blow dry, finger-combing as you go.

Overnight Curls At night, after washing hair, apply a bit of Redken's All Soft Argan Oil ($29) to hair and blow dry until it’s about 90 percent dry. Next, “section the hair in two to four sections, one on each side, two at the back,” Feng explained. If you have super long hair, split more sections at the back of the head. “Twist each section away from the face, then pin it and sleep on it- it will give you a loose curl the next day,” promised Feng. When you wake up, lightly brush through curls to soften the look before holding it in place with a veil of hairspray, like John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray ($5.99).
