With work-from-home orders abound, the desire to dress comfortably becomes more and more appealing. Yet, there is a constant struggle in deciding what’s cozy while still formal enough for work; a T-shirt with sweatpants, for example, may not be presentable for that afternoon team meeting. The struggle just gets worse with much of a woman’s work attire consisting of stiff blazers, blouses and thick pants. Thus came Pairess, a women- and Asian-owned brand that has created polished, comfortable and functional clothing for those many virtual business meetings. Using bold colors and clean cuts, their pieces feel cozy while looking put-together.

A worthy note — Pairess is also ethically made and aims to provide quality above all else. Pairess aims to empower women, including those who identify as women, transgender women, and non-binary people. To do so, Pairess partners with local women-run factories with fair wages and ethical working conditions, even purchasing surplus fabric from NYC brands to decrease waste. They always use high-quality products that pass durability and fabric tests — sourcing from the same factories as many premier brands. This makes their clothes “designer quality without the designer price tag.”

Pairess’s line consists of many monochromatic sets, allowing for easy mix-and-match shirts and pants. These pieces are made of a sustainable Tencel fabric that, according to the website, is “cloud-like” and “soft as cashmere.” Surely enough, when I tried it out, the fabric felt cool and smooth to the touch while also having a stretch. With its silkiness and flexibility, I certainly felt put-together, chic and ready for the Zoom camera.

Top options include a mock-neck style in black, bordeaux, and blue tie-dye. Pairess also offers two styles of blouses: ¾-long sleeve V-neck in cobalt blue and a sleeveless V-neck in blush pink.

Pairess carries three styles of pants: lounge pants that are more straight-fitted, relaxed slim pants designed to look like slacks, and culotte pants that have a more flared shape. All bottoms come in varying colors of blue, bordeaux, blue tie-dye, and black. Pairess also offers a super versatile dress with a zipper-front detail in cobalt blue and black, shown below.

The Serena (top) and the Patsy (bottoms)

If I had to choose a go-to or staple, it would be The Serena modal mock-neck top and The Patsy lounge pants, both in bordeaux. This red-tone color looks great on many skin tones as well. Otherwise, there’s the black and blue tie-dye options. Overall, Pairess’s sets made me feel relaxed at my home desk, which is all I want for a productive work-from-home day. It’s definitely become my favorite quarantine outfit for a busy day. These sets are a staple if you’re looking for something lightweight, soft and sophisticated.

Lastly, Pairess aims to impact more than their customers’ lives. Striving to provide more opportunities for women and women-owned businesses, Pairess works with women-owned partners, names their styles after powerful women, and donates part of their proceeds to Gyrl Wonder, a mentorship platform for young women of color.

While I haven’t been able to try on all the styles, the fabric alone makes me feel confident and cozy. As a great bonus, many pieces have phone-sized pockets, and all the pieces are machine-washable and wrinkle-resistant — making it even easier for you. With Pairess’s inspiring mission statement and incredible-feeling products, their pieces are great for a work-from-anywhere situation.
