Ever since she was young, Ning Chao has been obsessed with makeup. “I always wanted to be a makeup artist,” said Chao, who is currently the beauty director of social-networking site Beautylish.com. “I would do my mom’s makeup, I would do my friends’ makeup. But I never had a really steady hand, and my parents, being Asian, made me go to college. That was the end of the makeup artist dream.”

In college, at Columbia University in New York, Chao was introduced to the magazine industry, though the initial idea was met with skepticism from her family. “Because there weren’t any Asian American role models in the editorial world, my parents weren’t convinced that it was a field I could crack,” she recalled.

When she graduated from college and accepted her first job at Glamour, she knew that she was taking a huge risk. “I learned early on that I could not talk to my parents about work,” Chao said. “Their solution was always to go to grad school for engineering, even though it didn’t make any sense.” But it was a risk that paid off well. Chao rose quickly through the ranks, moving through a variety of positions at top fashion magazines in the nation—among them InStyle, Vogue and Elle—before landing as the Senior Beauty Editor at Marie Claire.

Despite the senior-level position she had reached, Chao continued to push herself and eventually left the somewhat cushy magazine lifestyle for the online world at Beautylish.com, an up-and-coming beauty-based social networking site where members post reviews, tutorials and pictures of beauty products and comment on other posts.

“It’s hard to ignore that our whole world is shifting in a digital direction. No matter how much I love magazines, I knew it was time to learn about online media,” Chao said. And when it comes to online media, Beautylish is a community that is pushing the frontier of social networking in respect to beauty.

“Other sites have a little of this is and a little of that. Beautylish is an online beauty portal where you can find everything you’d want to know about beauty,” she said. “I think the Internet has replaced the traditional makeup counter as the go-to destination to learn about beauty. There’s so much beauty information at your fingertips, and Beautylish makes it even easier to find exactly what you’re looking for.”

Rather than being just a place for beauty forums or a blog for reviews, Beautylish focuses on building a community of members who both contribute to and gain from the site, offering a rich array of multimedia. A post might be as simple as a photo, or a link might lead to a set of short reviews on the same product from different members. When it comes to beauty products, people naturally want to share what they think and what works for them. That, Chao explained, is the backbone of Beautylish.

“Being the first of a kind is a hard position to be in,” she said. “Because there’s nothing like it, people have a hard time understanding what it is. It’s like when Facebook, iTunes or Twitter first came out. But you’d be surprised how fast people come around.” And for a company that was founded in 2010, Beautylish is growing and making a name for itself quickly. The site currently holds over 70,000 user-posted videos, and its Twitter account alone has over 200,000 followers.

As a beauty maven who understands the industry like the back of her hand, Chao is quick to explain the difference between her old and new jobs. She describes magazines as a one-way relationship, where there is little chance for readers to interact with what they are reading. Beautylish, on the other hand, is built on the idea of community. “Our stories are a jumping-off point for stating a conversation,” she said. “The story is the catalyst for the conversation, as opposed to the whole conversation.”

If beauty is art, then those of us who routinely use cosmetics deserve some sort of all-
purpose eraser. Unfortunately, the tiniest mistakes—a small smudge, a little too much
eyeshadow—can ruin an entire look. Here are some tips to avoid having to redo your face
every time you lose control of your hand.

Photo via Flickr

If you can’t paint within the lines:
If you’re like me and can never manage to stay within the confines of very small nails,
nail polishes, particularly those with thin formulas or wide brushes, always have a nasty
way of spilling onto cuticles and other places where it doesn’t belong. Luckily, remover
pens exist to save us from these situations. The pens consist of a sponge-tip infused with
nail polish remover to quickly erase any smudges or unwanted spills.

A Q-Tip dipped in remover may also do the trick, but it’s far more convenient to have
pens on hand so you don’t have to deal risk nicking your nail polish some more—not to
mention their sponge tips are specifically designed for accurate removal. Try the Sephora
Collection Nail Polish Corrector Pen (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?
id=P37621&categoryId=B70) or the Essie Nail Corrector Pen (http://www.amazon.com/
Essie-Corrector-Polish-Remover-0-105oz/dp/B001TT6GIQ)

If you’ve smudged your eyeliner :
An eye makeup removing pen will do essentially the same thing for any mistakes
concerning eyeliner or mascara, whether you’ve laid on the pencil liner too thick, drawn
uneven cat eyes or smudged mascara on your lids. The pens are also useful to have in
your purse in case your liner smudges during the day. Try the Ulta Ready to Take Off
makeup remover (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?
skuId=2204580&productId=xlsImpprod1320094&navAction=push&navCount=1&catego
ryId=cat120217)

Another useful trick for midday smudge fixes is to dip a Q-Tip in makeup remover, let it
dry and carry it on you. When you need them, moisten with water and use as you would
the pen.

If you can’t keep the mascar a on your lashes:
This is an annoying problem, particularly with the fat mascara brushes that seem to be
the current trend. One accidental bump and the mascara ends up on your eyelid instead of
your eyelashes. You can always try the makeup removing pen, but prevention is your
first real defense. Look for mascara guards in SaSa or other local Asian beauty stores.
They are small, plastic beauty appliances that fit around your eyes to protect your lids
from the mascara wand.

http://gb.suntekstore.com/Pink-Eye-Mascara-Guard.html?gbus

If you went over boar d with the eyeshadow:
Messing up eyeshadow is a little more difficult to correct, particularly if you use
eyeshadow primers. When you’ve accidentally put on too much, try toning it down with
some powder foundation before you try removing it. If the shadow is too dark, blend a
light layer of powder over your entire lid. If the shadow extends too far, tap some
foundation just over the outer edges, so that the shadow blends into your skin. If you
don’t already use a powder foundation, try Bare Escentuals bareMinerals foundation
(http://www.sephora.com/browse/
product.jhtml;jsessionid=R3P22TV5RYLJWCV0KQRQIGQ?
id=P61003&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=5737)

If you picked at a zit and now it’s red:
You don’t want to have to cake half a tube of concealer over a zit just to hide the redness,
so try a simple aspirin spot treatment instead. Aspirin contains salicylic acid, an anti-
inflammatory agent found in many acne creams that helps to reduce the size and redness
of zits. To treat, take one tablet of uncoated aspirin (available at all drugstores), moisten
it with a few drops of water until it dissolves and spread on top of the problem area. The
aspirin should dry and start flaking off after 10 to 15 minutes, at which point you can
wash the rest off with water. If you are having trouble getting the aspirin to stay on your
skin, try mixing it with a little bit of aloe vera gel.

If your foundation is too pink for your skin:
For Asian women with yellow undertones, off-color foundation can be a big problem.
While many products appear to be the right shade at first, the difference between the
undertones of the foundation and the exposed skin becomes evident in direct sunlight.
It’s always a good idea to check how your foundation looks under natural lighting before
buying it (I always bring a small mirror to take on a short walk outside when I go to buy
foundation). But if you’re stuck with a foundation that’s too pink, there are a few tricks
you can use to lessen the situation.

1) Mix it: Try looking for another foundation or tinted moisturizer that’s extremely
yellow to balance out the pink. Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation
has some shades that have almost no pink undertones; look for a shade
closest to your natural skin tone. (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?
id=P217905&categoryId=B70)
2) Use a tinted primer: Green primers are designed to balance out redness on your skin, and can help combat the pinkness in your foundation. Try Smashbox’s Photo Finish Color Correcting primer in Adjust. (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P78811&categoryId=B70)
3) Add layers: A last-ditch effort is to use a yellow finishing powder such as
Clinique’s Instant Solutions Redness Reducing powder. It may add just a tint
of yellow to balance the pink. (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?
id=P232339&categoryId=B70)

Not all haircuts are universally flattering, so before you head to your salon, it’s always important to know what styles best fit your face.

There are four basic face shapes: oval, round, square and heart. Variations exist, such as the oblong and the triangular face shapes. Many people have faces that don’t perfectly fit a category, but with a general sense of what shape your face is, it’s easier to find a cut you’ll be happy with.

How to determine your face shape:
One way to find your face shape is to look in the mirror after you’ve washed your hair. Smooth your hair into a ponytail, exposing your ears. Then, trace the outline of your face on the surface of the mirror with an eyebrow pencil or washable marker.

If you want to be more precise, you could measure the width of your face across your forehead, the top of your cheekbones and your jawline, then compare these measurements to the length of your face, from your hairline to your chin.

Round Faces
The round-shaped face is about as long as it is wide, with full cheekbones and a comparatively narrow forehead and jawline. Owners of round faces often appear young for their age.

Recommendation: To define your face and de-emphasize fullness, ask for an “asymmetrical” cut with layers that closely frame the face. Longer hair visually lengthens the face, so try a style that falls to the chin or below. If you prefer short hair, have it cut with choppy, razored ends to create angles. Avoid straight bangs, as they make the face appear wider—you can ask for side-swept fringes—and try a part that is slightly off-center.

Square Faces
Like the round face, this shape has about the same length and width, but the jawline of a square face is sharper, with bolder angles. The forehead and jawline are about the same length.

Recommendation: Offset the sharp angles of a square face with a haircut in soft, graduated layers—the ends of your hair should be soft and wispy. Side-swept bangs will also help draw attention away from the angularity of the square face. Wavy hair or loose curls work well on a square face. Avoid blunt cuts and straight, heavy bangs and try a slightly off-center part.

Heart-Shaped Faces
The heart-shaped face is characterized by a wide forehead and cheekbones and a narrow chin.

Recommendation: Try a chin-length textured hairstyle to fill out the bottom half of your face with side-swept bangs to emphasize the eyes and cheekbones. Pixie cuts look flattering on the heart-shaped face; if you want longer hair, try wispy layers with a strong side part. Avoid blunt bangs and hairstyles that look fuller around the top half of your face.

Oval Faces
Considered the most balanced shape, the oval shape is one and a half times as long as it is wide. If you have an oval face, your forehead and jawline are about the same width.

Recommendation: Virtually any hairstyle works for this face shape. Try one that emphasizes one of your best features—for example, bangs draw attention to the eyes (and if your face is slightly longer than most oval-shaped faces, long bangs help visually shorten the distance from your hairline to your jawbone). Also, try parting your hair at the center.

A Haircut That Flatters Almost Anyone
Go for long layers. The shortest locks of hair should frame your face, hitting at about chin level, while the longest layer should be shoulder-length.

Prom season is just around the corner, and no outfit is complete without the makeup to match. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind while you have the night of your life.

A week in advance: picking your makeup

You’ll want to spice up your day-to-day routine with some special occasion makeup for prom, but without going over the top. False eyelashes will help your eyes pop, and highlighter will give your face a glow in the pictures. That’s a better option than disco ball glitter—you’re going to a formal dance, not a nightclub.

Pick your colors wisely. People tend to pick eye shadow that matches their dresses, but that often results in an overload of one color. Instead, pick a color that complements your dress. If you’re wearing red, try a gold or light purple shadow. If you’re wearing blue, give frosty whites or light grays a shot. Consider your eye shadow another part of your outfit—you would never wear red pants with a red top, would you?

Go with the good quality stuff. You want your makeup to still be fresh when you’re taking all your pictures, especially after you’ve danced the night away. Don’t worry, high quality doesn’t always mean expensive—drugstore brands Wet n’ Wild and NYX both have great pigmented eye shadows that have excellent staying power when used with a base.

Practice makes perfect. Give yourself a run-through day and make sure you actually know what you’re doing. Besides troubleshooting, this also helps you get a good estimate of how long it’ll take you to get ready, so you can better plan your schedule the day of prom.

The night of prom: applying your makeup

Start early and be prepared for mini-disasters. Give yourself plenty of cushion time to fix any smudges or start over if necessary. I suggest adding an extra half hour to however long your run-through took. The worst thing to do is panic because you don’t have enough time. It might help to keep makeup remover and cotton swabs on hand, just in case.

Get rid of extra oil. Remember that you’re up for a night of pictures and dancing—you want to do whatever you can to keep your face looking fresh. Use a mattifying primer under your foundation and a blotting powder over it. Hint: layering your powder blush on top of a cream blush elongates lasting power.

Pack your purse for any emergencies. Bring oil-blotting sheets that you can easily whip out before pictures. Q-tips dipped in makeup remover are also useful to take with you. Let them dry first and pack them, then moisten with some water if you need a quick fix for smudgy mascara or lipstick.

When you get home: removing your makeup

All that makeup and sweat can’t be good for your skin, and the last thing you want is to pass out from exhaustion without taking it all off. Be sure to remove everything, including eyelash glue, which can be a pain the next morning. If face wash alone isn’t enough, use a makeup-removing toner or wipes. If you still have the energy, put on an overnight mask, which will help rejuvenate your skin.

It’s common knowledge that your body changes drastically between childhood and adulthood, but you may have also noticed that your skin can become collateral damage in these hormone-fueled transitions. Here are three common skin problems and a few ways to combat them:

Photo by Helga Weber via Flickr

Acne

What is it? Acne is a condition caused when sebum, an oil produced by the skin, gets clogged in the skin’s pores, causing dead skin cells and bacteria to accumulate in the area. A pimple develops as a result of inflammation from this excess buildup and can be aggravated by stress, friction from leaning on or rubbing skin and pressure from clothing, hair or glasses.

How to treat it: Try over-the-counter products that contain salicylic acid, which dries up pimples, or benzoyl peroxide, which decreases acne-causing bacteria. Make sure to switch between products every two to three months to maintain effectiveness. If OTC treatments don’t work after eight weeks, consult a dermatologist, who may prescribe medication or antibiotics to help control acne.

Prevention:

Wash your face twice a day, but don’t overdo it—you might end up irritating the skin. Rather than scrubbing, gently massage your face with warm water and mild soap. Afterwards, apply lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide to decrease bacteria buildup.

Avoid touching your face with your fingers or items that tend to collect skin oils, such as your cell phone.

Change your pillowcase often to avoid the oils from your skin and hair that rub onto the pillowcase. Also, make sure to remove your makeup, which probably has many preservatives in it, before going to bed.

Hair products like conditioner and hair gel contain ingredients that can also contribute to clogged pores. Try to keep your hair away from your face by tying your hair back or wearing a headband.

Never pop a pimple—doing so only drives bacteria further into the skin, creating scars. Use skincare products that are oil-free or “non-comedogenic” (meaning they won’t clog pores).

Sun exposure can irritate skin and make acne worse, so apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 daily, even in cloudy weather. Use a sunscreen that provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays, usually labeled “broad-spectrum protection,” and is non-comedogenic.

Heavy Sweating

What is it? Excess sweating occurs in many places on the body, not just under the arms. Perspiration glands are especially active during adolescence, and, what’s more, they begin secreting chemicals into the sweat that can cause a stronger odor once puberty starts. Body odor occurs when sweat mingles with bacteria on the skin.

How to treat it: Try an antiperspirant to reduce sweating. Whichever product you use, follow its directions carefully. If over-the-counter antiperspirants aren’t effective enough, speak to a doctor.

Prevention:

Make sure to shower daily with mild soap and dry yourself completely after, especially in the armpit area.

Wear clean clothes. If you sweat a lot during workouts, wash your gym clothes after each session before wearing them again.

Let your shoes dry out between wearings and alternate between pairs. If your shoes get smelly, leave them out in the sun for a day to kill bacteria.

Wear clothes with natural fibers, such as cotton or linen, to absorb sweat.

To address greater concern about underarm stains, buy underarm shields or dress shields in the lingerie section of your local department store. These are pads that attach to the armpits underneath your clothing, which soak up sweat.

Dry Skin

What is it? Dry skin may be itchy and occurs when the skin sheds cells excessively, resulting in a rough, scaly appearance. Common dry areas include the hands, legs, the soles of the feet and the abdomen. Your skin might be drier during the winter, when humidity is low and the heater is on at full blast indoors.

How to treat it: Use a moisturizer that contains ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and glycerine—these all help the skin retain water. In addition, petroleum jelly, like Vaseline, and mineral oil can be massaged into the skin after a bath. If your skin itches, place a cool compress on the trouble spot and, if necessary, talk to your doctor about creams you can use for relief.

Prevention:

Stay hydrated—drink lots of water.

Limit your baths or showers to around 10 minutes and use warm water instead of very hot water, which can strip your skin of moisture. While in the shower, use a mild soap-free cleanser on your skin and then apply moisturizer after.

Eat foods that are rich in omega-3 to help your skin lock in natural oils. These foods include salmon, sardines, walnuts and flaxseed.

Disclaimer: The advice above is given only as a general guideline and is not meant to replace the guidance of a doctor or dermatologist.

As the go-to makeup brand for ladies who want to look fabulous and trendy without breaking the bank, NYX Cosmetics has grown to become a major cosmetic powerhouse, with over 10,000 beauty supply stores in the U.S. and a presence in over 40 international markets. We caught up with its founder, CEO and creative director, Toni Ko, who started the brand in her mid-20s in 1999 with the strong belief that looking fabulous means never compromising affordability.

We give you the inside scoop into Ko’s ‘can-do’ attitude, what inspired her to start her own business and her advice on how you can start your career in beauty. Also make sure to look out for our upcoming giveaway contest, where you can win a fabulous NYX prize pack!

Mochi: Tell us about yourself and how you got started in beauty.
Ko: My family has been in the beauty business since I was a teenager, so it was a natural progression to create my own line of color cosmetics.

Mochi: How did you start your own business, and what is your advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Ko: I implemented a “just do it” attitude and mustered the courage to follow it through! My main advice is to have a true passion for your field of business. Don’t let money be your driving force—if you have passion and drive, success will follow. You also must possess an incredible knowledge of your industry and clients. If you’re not already an expert, make yourself one! To be successful, you must know the product or service you are selling 1000 percent better than your competitor.

Mochi: What is the story behind NYX? Can you explain what NYX represents and how it’s different from other beauty companies?
Ko: NYX gives you the tools to look fabulous without breaking the bank. When I started the company, I wanted to develop a makeup line that met the needs of my discriminating girlfriends. We wanted the impossible—makeup that was fun, on-trend, high-quality and affordable. I am not your typical CEO in a suit and tie sitting behind a desk. I find inspiration through varying cultures, food, travel, nature … I live, eat and breathe NYX cosmetics. It’s my essence.

Mochi: What inspired you to get involved with beauty?
Ko: Beauty is my passion. I believe that beauty is not just about looking good, but rather about feeling good. We feel more confident when we look good. Likewise, when we’re confident and self-assured, we smile more. It’s a positive domino effect—and one that I’m proud to be a part of.

Mochi: What are your top five must-have products?
Ko: Bronzer, mascara, eyebrow powder, lip gloss and a big smile.

Mochi: What new and exciting products and ideas can we see from NYX in the near future?
Ko: NYX will be launching a new, revamped website in the next few months. It is designed to be more interactive with our customers, hold forums, have a blog—basically be your go-to beauty site. Our loyal fans are our priority, so I’m thrilled this site will let us have a more personal interaction with them all.

Mochi: Who do you look up to in the world of beauty?
Ko: My beautiful friends. They gave me inspiration and support when I first launched the brand and continue to do so. I often name products after them!

Mochi: Do you have any advice for our readers who want to begin a career in beauty?
Ko: Embrace your passion. Begin your career in beauty (or any industry) because that’s where your heart lies and because you simply love it.

It’s your first date. The guy who gives you butterflies has asked you out and you’re smiling from ear-to-ear. After the initial excitement, you’re confused about the next step. How should you look? What is appropriate first date makeup? To help you look picture-perfect for the big date, here are some simple beauty tips to keep in mind.

The Day Before

Focus on skin care and a healthy diet—with fatigued skin, you can instantly lose your radiance, so skin care is essential to your beautiful regimen. In addition to your regular routine, we recommend DIY masks, such as a green tea facial for a lovely radiant complexion. Extra perk: you can usually find all the ingredients in your kitchen pantry.

As for your diet, make sure to eat tons of fruits and vegetables, such as papaya, which helps clear pimples; grapefruit, which is rich in Vitamin C and reduces wrinkles; and sweet potatoes, which are rich in antioxidants and help rejuvenate skin. Steer clear of any oily, fried or junk foods as they may cause breakouts and make you feel sluggish and bloated the next day. Most importantly, remember to drink ample water, as it’s the most effective way of flushing out toxins and keeping your skin hydrated and glowing.

The Big Day

Courtesy Shuuemura-usa.com, Sephora.com and Stilacosmetics.com

Eyes. Keep them looking simple and bright. Apply a neutral shimmer eye shadow all over your lid. Follow by curling your eyelashes with Shu Uemura’s esteemed eyelash curler and then liberally apply mascara like Bare Escentuals Buxom lash mascara. This will open up your eyes and give them an instant twinkle. Stila’s Eyeshadow in Kitten is a universal shimmer that works well on all skin tones.

Courtesy Sephora.com

Cheeks. You want your skin to glow with radiance. Apply a shimmery peach blush on the apples of your cheeks for the perfect sparkle. The warm color will highlight your skin tone. Try Benefit’s Georgia powder for a sweet, silky finish.

Courtesy Sephora.com

Lips. Pick your favorite pink lip gloss and glide it on. You want your lips to look soft and kissable. We love Tarte’s Double Dose lip gloss because it contains the antioxidant-rich acai berry and smells minty fresh.

Finally, spritz on a bit of fragrance, like Daisy by Marc Jacobs or Vera Wang Princess, for a sweet scent and you’re good to go.

Follow these simple beauty tips to make your eyes glow, your cheeks radiant and your lips glisten. Remember, at the end of the day, beauty comes from within, so it’s most important to let your true colors shine. In the wise words of beauty icon Audrey Hepburn, “happiest girls are the prettiest girls.”

On an early summer morning in Manhattan, Eva Chen walks into the W Hotel. Tall and slender, with barely noticeable makeup and a short, minimalist hairdo, she looks exactly how you would picture a Teen Vogue editor to be— effortlessly chic, with an astute attentiveness. Despite any ill-preconceived notions of intimidating editors due to my obsession with The Devil Wears Prada, I was immediately at ease with Eva and her endearing banter—especially after she started gulping down her order of breakfast and quickly apologized, “Sorry you have to watch me eat. I have to eat. I can’t not eat.”

In her candid and down-to-earth nature, the beauty and health director points out that the magazine industry isn’t all fun and play like the media often portrays. “99.9 percent of the time, you’re in the office at work,” said Chen. Work for her, however, includes being bombarded with at least 100 beauty products per day, attending fashion shows, backstage interviews and going to industry events.

For Chen, her job encompasses what she loves to do most—writing and helping others. As she unashamedly admitted, “I have a problem. People don’t even ask me for advice and I just give it.” Through the Teen Vogue brand and its magazine, website and blog—she was the first beauty editor at Condé Nast to start a blog—plus her personal Twitter, she’s been able to engage with teens in a whole new personal way. She’s the cool, smart sister you wish you always had around to ask for advice—and now only a Twitter @reply away.

“I’m open to giving [advice] probably because I remember being a teen and how hard it was to ask for help,” said Chen. “My whole life, I always wanted an older sister. I feel there’s a lot of value in having female friends, whether you’re a boy or girl, so I think that’s another reason why I love my job—because I grew up without having someone to turn to.”

As Chen opened up about her childhood, it became immediately apparent why many Asian girls reach out to her for advice and can identify with her easily. “I think Asian culture is very specific in that you’re told not to ask for help,” said Chen. “Even as Asian culture becomes more integrated into Western or American society, I still think, culturally, there are a few things that will probably hold true—the notion of ‘keeping face,’ the notion of ‘don’t go to others with your problems,’ like ‘figure it out yourself.’ I don’t know [if] that will change, so I think it’s really important for people to feel like they have someone to turn to. And I don’t mind being that person. Like I said, I can relate.”

From age 13 to 20, Eva spent every summer vacation taking summer school classes at Hunter College or Columbia University. Her parents, whom she described are “like many other Asian American parents [who] put a premium on my education,” wanted her to pursue business, law or medicine, and she enrolled in Johns Hopkins on a pre-med path with plans of becoming a doctor.

Anxious to take a break and do something different and fun, Chen applied for internships in the creative field between the summer of her junior and senior college years, landing a coveted full-time, paid internship at Harper’s Bazaar, which ultimately jump-started her magazine career. Chen recalled, “My first day of work [at Harper’s Bazaar] was kind of really an eye-opening experience. It was just that light-bulb-going-off-over-your-head moment. I just kind of realized that there was more out there. There were people who loved words and loved to write and loved to craft these stories and tell stories to people as their career.”

In retrospect, Chen admits there were clues all along, such as her love of reading and how English classes and the written word came really naturally to her as opposed to learning organic chemistry. “I think there are clues in everyone’s lives, whether or not they choose to tap into that,” said Chen. “So if you love movies and all you want to do is go to movies, you could probably make a career out of it. The world is so much bigger than doctor, banker, lawyer, accountant—all these ‘stable jobs.’ So generally, whatever your hobby is, there’s probably a way to make it into a career. That’s a lesson that I learned way, way later that I wish I’d known when I was 15.”

Besides the benefits of her internship experiences, Chen’s unexpected shift from medicine to magazines eventually ended up affecting her job today. “It’s funny because every experience I’ve had, from pre-med even, has translated into my writing and beauty career,” said Chen. “I’m also the health director at Teen Vogue, so my interest in science, nutrition, health and wellness has translated over into what I do now. It’s been really interesting to see how it all ties together. There’s no such thing as coincidences.”

Chen’s prowess in making the most of every opportunity, whether expected or not, and embracing changes in her life draws back to her roots and backbone—her Taiwanese parents who immigrated to the U.S. in the late ‘70s and her childhood in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Of her parents, Chen said, “I see how hard they’ve worked to be able to send my brother and me to good schools—to provide us with everything we’ve ever wanted. I’ve been incredibly blessed to have the best kind of parents that are out there.” Though an obvious answer, Eva immediately said her parents are the most influential people in her life. “My parents gave me the foundation upon which everything else is built. They gave me the education that instilled within me the confidence to do what I can do.”

In relation to her job as beauty and health director, Chen’s mom has perpetuated her love for skincare. “I feel like I grew up with a different perception of beauty because I saw my mom slather these creams on,” said Chen. “When we go out in the sun, she basically put so much sunscreen on that she would look like a ghost. She wears hats that are like umbrellas and would sit in the shade. I think the level of attention she paid to her skin definitely had an impact on me growing up.” And the same goes with her attention to wellness: “We didn’t grow up drinking much soda. We didn’t grow up eating much meat. We drank tea with everything and dessert was fruit.”

Though her cultural background has played a considerable role in her career as a magazine editor today, she doesn’t let her ethnicity strictly define her. Rather, Chen draws the most inspiration from the multi-ethnic, diverse city of New York where she grew up and currently resides. “It’s not one person or thing for me, but I derive such incredible energy from living in New York. I love living in New York. When people are like ‘You should move to…,’ I’m like ‘No. I’m staying in New York.’”

The New York City magazine editor lifestyle is one to be envied, but as Eva demonstrates, it’s a job for the passionate, giving individuals who love to express themselves through the written word and converse with their readers. Though there was more than could fit in this tiny space from our conversation, that Eva Chen has and will continue to impart in substantial dialogues with the teen audience and happily share her beauty and health advice—or any advice at all, whether you ask for it or not—is evident.

As I was browsing through YouTube videos one day, an incredibly cute Asian girl doing a makeup tutorial caught my eye. Lindy Tsang, who is known as “Bubbi” on YouTube, is originally from Ireland (with a cute accent to boot!), but I immediately connected with her cheerful-yet-sincere personality and easy-to-follow videos. Aside from makeup tutorials, Lindy also tackles the subject of inner beauty. Her goal is to motivate and inspire confidence in other girls—starting with her 250,000 subscribers and the 9.5 million people who have seen her videos. Most recently, she launched a successful clothing line at Bubzbeauty.com. Read on to see how Lindy got to where she is today.

Mochi: What was your childhood like?

Lindy: I was born in Dundonald, Ireland and spent most of my childhood in the small town of Glengormley. I was brought up by my grandparents, who I have the utmost respect for, because my parents had to work so hard. I was a small Asian kid, so I guess I stood out as well being one of the few Asian students at primary and high school.

Mochi: Did being one of few Asian students make a difference?

Lindy: When I was five, a little girl pointed at me and laughed because I’m Chinese. I thought it was my fault and remember feeling extremely ashamed. Starting high school, I was nervous and worried what my skin color might bring me. Needless to say, I did get bullied but what doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger. My parents asked me if I wanted to change schools, but I refused to because I realized I am what I am no matter where I go. I am 100 percent proud of my heritage. It is not my skin color that makes me who I am; it is what’s underneath it.

Mochi: How did you start making your YouTube videos?

Lindy: After graduating university with a course I really didn’t care about, I remember struggling to find a job. Five days a week, I would work at my parents’ restaurant. I remember watching some makeup tutorials during university and just thinking, “Wow, these girls are amazing.” The thought of being able to help somebody pick up their confidence motivated and inspired me, so I uploaded my first video in August 2007. I have always been interested in beauty and fashion and sharing my journey with others seemed to be the way to go.

Mochi: I really admire that you have made videos on the importance of inner beauty in addition to your tutorials. What are your opinions on inner beauty?

Lindy: No makeup can cover an ugly heart. Just like helping somebody or being nice, we all have the ability to do it but not all of us will. I think it’s crazy how confidence can take years to build up but seconds to destroy. I used to look at the mirror and just burst out in tears because I felt so ashamed of how I looked. It’s hard not to because we are constantly surrounded by media which promotes a very distorted view on beauty. I gave myself a mission to help people feel more beautiful about themselves, and in return, they ended up making me feel more beautiful than I ever did.

Mochi: What are some of your other interests?

Lindy: I have a comedy channel on YouTube called “Bubbiosity.” I just love making people laugh. As a designer, this means I like to whip out my sketchbook and do little sketches here and there. I love to catch up with my family and friends. Painting is what I do to unwind, and of course, traveling for inspiration.

Mochi: Have you ever dealt with any hardships to get to where you are today, and if so, how did you cope with it?

Lindy: I had to leave the United Kingdom to move to Hong Kong to pursue my clothing range. It was very difficult to leave everything behind, including my family and friends. It took a while to get used to, but I am learning so much in Hong Kong and it has been very exciting. I visit them as often as I can.

Mochi: What advice would you give to young women that want to be successful like you?

Lindy: My best advice would be to always be willing to try and willing to learn. I have lived my entire life trying to please certain people in my life and realized it will never be enough for them. There will always be people in life that will try to slow you down, but you keep moving and let your family and friends be your strength too. Life is too short to ponder and wait for miracles. Make it happen.

This product allows you to clean your hair without water by gently and instantly ridding your hair of impurities, toxins and product build-up. With its light and conditioning formula, healthy hair is literally at your fingertips. Simply shake and spray onto hair and roots, then style as usual.

Be Sun Savvy and Skin Smart
Clinique Sun SPF 50 Face Cream, $17.50

When traveling, the most important item you can pack is sunscreen. Get a healthy dose of UVA and UVB protection with Clinique Sun SPF 50 Face Cream. Don’t be fooled by its pint-sized exterior; its contents are loaded with sophisticated SolarSmart Technology, which adds antioxidants to ensure high-level protection against burning and aging effects caused by sun exposure. This product is oil-free and is gentle enough for those with sensitive skin.

For starters, what’s great about this product is that it’s non-liquid (perfect for plane rides). Secondly, it comes in travel-friendly packaging with a snap closure to ensure your wipes are moist and secure, making this product super easy and convenient to tote around in your purse, backpack and yes—even your fanny pack. It gets rid of excess oil and makeup (even waterproof) on the eyes, lips and face with just one wipe—no water necessary.

Whether you’re ready to relax after a long day of sightseeing or excitedly getting ready for a full day of adventure, the last thing you need to worry about are annoying hotel soap bars or shower gels that irritate and dry out your skin. With L’Occitane Organic Lavender Shower Gel, you can literally wash your worries (and dry skin) away. This soothing shower gel has ingredients such as organic lavender oil and is blended with 100 percent plant-based formula, so your body will thank you for its moisturizing benefits, while your mind will be at ease.

If your makeup bag is often the heaviest thing in your suitcase, follow these simple tips to cut down what you bring while still maintaining your beauty routine on the road.

1. Let your products multi-task

There is no doubt that bringing one product instead of two will save you space. But, in addition to conventional dual-use products such as makeup removing cleansers or two-in-one shampoo and conditioner, here are some others products to check out. Try using Vaseline as both a lip balm and eye makeup remover. You may need a towel to help remove the jelly, but it’s effective. Lipsticks or tinted lip balms can be used for a pop of color on the cheeks instead of blush—or the other way around. Apply clear lip balm or Vaseline and use a clean eye shadow brush to lightly tap a layer of powder blush onto your lips. Finally, conditioner can work as a shaving cream—just be sure you rinse your razor out carefully afterwards.

2. Use samples

Stores like Sephora offer samples for all of their skin and hair care products that can last for multiple uses, often just enough for the duration of a short trip. Specialty stores such as Kiehl’s also offer generous sample packets for nearly all of their products in stores—one sample of their Avocado Eye Cream is approximately 1/3 of the full sized jar. Samples also prevent potential spills from the occasionally poorly screwed-on top.

3. Leave tools at home

Ditch bulky hairstyling tools like your straightener or blow-dryer. Braid wavy bangs to the side, or leave curly hair in a bun, while you sleep and slowly pull it out to get a bouncy ponytail. Even skincare tools such as exfoliating face brushes can be substituted with a simple microfiber or exfoliating towel.

4. Go with powder

Powder versions of everyday beauty products comply with airport security regulations. Dry shampoo doesn’t even require water to use. Simply tap it into the roots of your hair and brush it out. If you’re really in a stitch, use loose powder that you would normally use over foundation for a similar effect—it will absorb some of the oil in your hair.

5. Eliminate liquids completely

Products such as makeup-removing towelettes and sunscreen wipes are specifically formulated to be portable, disposable and easy to use. Luckily enough, they don’t quite have enough liquid in them to be tossed out at security check. Be sure to also check out self-tanning wipes for a travel-safe glow.

These days, online beauty gurus, who teach viewers makeup and hair tricks through uploaded videos, are a dime a dozen. But 18-year-old Canadian Michelle Trinh has managed to stand out among the pack as one of the most followed experts on the internet. Going by YouTube handle “s2pandapple,” Trinh has had nearly 10 million views since she shared her first video in 2008.

Courtesy Michelle Trinh

After watching amateur makeup tutorials online, Trinh began to imagine herself in front of the camera doling out the same kind of beauty advice. At the end of her junior year, she decided to follow in their footsteps by creating an account and dusting off her digital camera. “In the beginning, I was ecstatic every time I got a new subscriber and very grateful that I had viewers. It wasn’t until I started posting hair videos that I started to receive many more followers,” she said. “At first, I didn’t think it was real because I couldn’t compare myself to the gurus I looked up to. I am extremely grateful for the amount of followers I have now and still can’t believe how I’ve reached it.”

Trinh originally kept her videos, which include tutorials on cutting your own side-swept bangs and painting zebra-striped tips on your nails, a secret from her friends and family. She was later exposed when her brother discovered her YouTube channel on her monitor and when classmates caught wind of the viral buzz of her videos. “To this day, I’m still embarrassed and shy [about my work],” she said, “but I know my friends and family are very proud of me. My parents are always concerned about my safety and well-being on the internet—interacting with people I’ve never met—but now they like to brag about me to their friends.”

The video star is currently in her first year at Humber College, majoring in Cosmetic Management. Trinh admits that up until now, she never had any formal training with hair or makeup, crediting her mother and aunts with teaching her how to do her hair.“For makeup, I think some of my ability comes from my artistic talent, and my only makeup trainers were the helpful gurus on YouTube,” she said. After finishing her education, Trinh dreams of becoming a professional makeup artist and hair stylist. “I would love to work in theatrical shows or something like Cirque De Soleil, where I can expand on more than just makeup and makeup art,” she said.

For future gurus, she offers sound advice. “They should make videos for their own enjoyment. Many people get caught up in the glory of money and free products, and they start to lose the objective of why they wanted to make videos,” she said. “Be true to yourself and never change to please others. After making videos for so long, I’ve learned that you can never please everyone.”

We’ve all had one of those mornings—maybe you overslept for an 8 a.m. class, forgot about an important assignment due that day or are rushing to work after a long night. To help you get out the door sooner, we’ve got some easy tips to trim your beauty routine. Whether you’ve got five, 15 or 30 minutes, here are some ways to quickly get yourself ready for the day ahead.

Streamline your routine

Even on more leisurely days, it always helps to choose and set aside your outfit the night before. The same applies for classroom necessities—gather everything you need the night before to avoid scrambling or forgetting things. If you consistently have trouble waking up or foresee running short on time, try showering at night instead of in the morning, especially if you have to compete with roommates for the bathroom.

The 5-minute routine

The goal: To avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed (even if you did). These efficient steps are designed to brighten your face while allowing you to squeeze out a few more minutes of beauty rest.

Face: Lightly sweep on a bright blush. A peachy or coral blush is perfect for giving you a subtle glow. Try shades like Milani Luminous or NARS Orgasm. Smooth on your favorite tinted chapstick, like Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmers, which come in a range of colors.

Eyes: Apply a shimmery brow highlighter under the ends of your brows and near your tear duct. Sweep a light pearl shadow across your lid. Neutrogena’s Mineral Sheers for Eyes duos combine two natural, shimmery shades.

Hair: Throw your hair into a loose bun and slip on a headband. If necessary, pin bangs to the side (especially convenient if you haven’t had time to wash your hair).

The 15-minute routine

The goal: To avoid looking hurried or rushed. Quick and effective, this routine is great for getting you to class on time, while looking put-together.

Face: Apply concealer to any spots or undereye areas, or tinted moisturizer if your skin needs it. Products like Maybelline’s Dream Mousse concealer work well in a hurry since they are easy to apply with your fingers. Sweep on blush and apply chapstick.

Eyes: Sweep a light shadow across your top lid and smudge a thin dash of liner on your bottom lash line. A pencil liner like Rimmel Special Eyes is the quickest option and will give you a natural looking line.

Hair: Wear your normal style, but give your hair some extra “pizzazz” by adding cute accessories—like decorative clips or headbands.

The 30-minute routine: Looking polished

The goal: To look calm and collected. This regimen is perfect for those days when you actually have the time and desire to dress up a little.

Face: Apply concealer or tinted moisturizer if you think it’s necessary. For the most coverage, blend with a brush. Sweep on blush—for a more dramatic look, experiment with bolder shades. Sweep on a shimmery highlighter above your cheekbones. Apply lip gloss for a more polished look.

Eyes: Sweep a light shadow across your top lid. Use a darker shadow near your lashline and blend. Line your top and bottom lash lines. For a more intense look, try a liquid liner like L’Oreal Lineur Intense. Curl your lashes and apply mascara. Shu Uemura and Shiseido make great eyelash curlers. For a polished look, try a lengthening mascara like L’Oreal Double Extend.

Hair: Try a new style—curl or straighten your hair, or experiment with trends like side braids.

From annoying roommates to exhausting classes and internships, the stress of college life can lead to breakouts and frown lines. Considering the high costs of dermatology visits and prescriptions, here are some tried-and-true natural, inexpensive do-it-yourself facial masks to relieve and nurture your skin.

Plain Yogurt Facial Mask

Good for those with sensitive skin, plain yogurt is filled with Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), protein and fat. Together, these ingredients illuminate and brighten your skin while increasing elasticity.

Ingredient: Any plain yogurt from your local market.

Cleanse your face.

Evenly apply plain yogurt on face.

After 10 to 15 minutes, you will notice that the yogurt has dried up. Gently rub your face with a damp washcloth, which will help remove dead skin cells.

Wash off the remaining product.

Cucumber Facial Mask

Cucumber moisturizes the skin and also provides Vitamins A, B2 and C. These vitamins weaken brown melanin (the reason for the horrid dark circles) and create a “whitening” effect.

Ingredients: 2/3 of a cucumber, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 tablespoon of honey

Blend all ingredients in a mixer. Flour makes the blend thick enough to stay on the face, and has the added benefit of moisturizing and tightening the skin.

Apply product to face for 10 to 15 minutes.

Wash your face with cold water, which will tighten pores to make sure the mask has the maximum effect.

Note: If you don’t have a blender, cut the cucumbers into one-inch rounds, dip them into honey and place the pieces on your face. Honey helps hydrate, exfoliate and heal skin. Then follow steps two and three above.

Green Tea Facial Mask

Green tea is a great moisturizer because it contains Vitamin A and tannin, which helps balance oil on the face. This helps relieve acne and soothe skin.

Ingredients: Green tea bags, hot water and cotton swipes

Put a green tea bag in hot water.

When green tea is brewed, soak cotton swipes in the tea.

Clean your face with water and soap.

After 15 minutes, gently rinse face.

Additional tip: Save the tea bags in the fridge and apply them directly on puffy eyes the next morning, to reduce under-eye bags.

Tomato Facial Mask

Tomato is great for sensitive skin because of its mild nature. They help deeply cleanse skin and tighten pores.

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of mashed tomatoes, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 tablespoon flour

Wash and mash the tomatoes (this works better if you have a mixer).

Add in milk and flour.

Apply on cleansed face for 10 to 15 minutes.

Wash off the mask with cold water.

Banana Facial Mask

Rich with Vitamin A, bananas are great skin softeners and an ideal facial mask ingredient for those with dry skin.

Ingredients: ½ a banana, ½ an egg yolk, 1 tablespoon Vitamin E skin oil (or baby oil)

Mash the banana.

Add the yolk and oil, and mix well.

Apply on cleansed face for 10-15 minutes.

Wash off the mask with cold water.
