A little late I know but this has really inspired me and made me feel more confident about my relationship. Everybody I know told me it'll never work and I'm glad to know there's hope even if it's tough, me and my girlfriend are very close but it's only natural to feel a little uneasy about college. Thanks again

Followed the article from AsianLife Magazine. Wonderful write-up Connie as I've never heard of Debbie Lee prior.

I'm an adopted Korean who grew up on meatloaf and potatoes and recently married to my wife who is Thai. We've been cooking together now for several months and it's been a fun adventure from having meatloaf with kimchee to pork fried hashbrowns. LOL Always great to hear about other Koreans and asians mixing things up here in the US! ;)

Found this article thru a career-oriented Asian American link. Serendipity!

I'd not heard of Ms. Lee before, but it's nice to know someone is out there working hard to bring the unique and delicious flavors of Korean cuisine to a larger audience. And being a non-purist who deeply believes that diversity is one of America's greatest strengths, I think it very cool, the idea of fusing traditional Korean elements to those of other cultures to create something new.

I didn't really explore much in the kitchen until recently, but I have noticed that I do gravitate towards recipes, whatever their national origin, that spark and sizzle on the tongue, as through lots of garlic, hot pepper, or curry. Since I'm Korean American, I guess it was to be expected. :)

Hi Tiffany! Thanks for sharing your story. That's so cool! Hot pot is a tradition that my family and I share as well during Lunar New Year. It's always nice to get together and catch up over a nice warm meal.

My favorite memories of cooking with my family are the times my family prepares hot pot, Taiwan-style. We always have two flavors, one non-spicy and one very spicy, and we used to have plates and plates of food to drop into the pot to eat. Most of the time, dinner is a rushed affair since everyone is busy with work, but since it takes a while for the food to cook, we would have the opportunity to actually have a conversation. We usually only eat hot pot during the winter time, and definitely on Lunar New Year. It's a tradition I enjoy not only because of the wide selection of food including fish balls and sliced beef, but it's when I can have some family bonding time-- something that get harder and harder to do as I get older.

I feel that the Linsanity hype has been dying for the past week or so, and maybe that's a good thing. There's been way too much pressure for him to be more than an Asian-American basketball player-- people were raising him up to be the hero of the Asian-American community. And the problem with that is that that is how we're now playing into the white-dominated corporations and media system that repressed us in the first place. We didn't make Linsanity happen, they did. They found a market in Jeremy Lin, and I would say that's how he became a commodity to be exploited. There's no denying that he's a great basketball player and his story is a good story, but people need to realize that we actually need to do more than just passively rooting for him to demonstrate Asian-American pride. We should be more involved in public engagement and political participation. Jeremy Lin is just the beginning, we have got to take this further.

Good luck with your endeavors Malia! I'm in college in NYC about to graduate this spring, and one major advice for you I have is, don't ever expect the fantasy that New York City will be amazing and give you all the sparkly, wonderful things that movies and television always fictionalize. People always assume that coming to NYC will be a smooth ride when in fact, it's much bumpier, sometimes overwhelming and at times just plain confusing. Don't feel pressured to follow the NYC pace right away. Baby steps! Go at your own pace and slowly discover what's right for you and you'll make it just fine. NYC is only good to people when those people actually go out and seek things out for themselves. Most of all, don't ever have too high of expectations; set realistic ones for yourself. You'll be recognized for your hard work and drive that you show in your article, just don't try and be anything else but who you are and you'll stand out in that job interview or wherever else! Best of luck to you!

Hiya,

Just wanted to say that Jeremy Lin actually didn't get drafted by the Warriors at first. He was skipped over during the entire NBA draft. The Dallas Mavericks gave him an opportunity to play in their summer development league afterwards though and it was there that he drew attention from NBA teams for his stellar plays. (He did really well against the #1 draft pick, John Wall, during one of their games.) It was then that the Warriors and a few other NBA teams showed interest in him.

One great idea in this tough economy is a stay home vacation. This is not only a fun activity for the whole family but it can help you explore your are a lot better. A fun idea would be to go camping, it could be right down the road but it can feel like you are hours away from home.
