I’m overweight by American standards but my Asian parents and family see me as OBESE. (Trust me, I’m not.) I have huge self-esteem issues, especially when I go back to see my relatives in China, because that’s the FIRST thing everyone I meet says to me – “You’re so fat!”

It kills me inside a little bit every time I hear that comment. This hurt, this pain has been so evident in my life that I don’t know what to do with myself anymore. I see my body as just fine (just big in some parts), but Asian society completely disagrees. I am extremely self-conscious whenever I’m around other Asians and I always compare myself to their bodies, because it’s much slimmer than I.

^ I agree with Emily’s comment above. I would have liked to hear more about fitting in with the “all Asians are stick skinny” perception. There’s almost a competitiveness between groups of Asian girls for who can be skinnier, and it’s hard because some Asian girls naturally have that anorexic look, and then you take her Asian girl friend who naturally isn’t, but strives to become that skinny.

I was hoping for more of an insight on how many Asian-Americans struggle with eating disorders because of the perception that Asians “are all skinny,” and the pressure to fit in with this image. It’s a notion that seems to be aggravatingly promoted not just by the media but by fellow Asians too. From personal experience, I see a discouragingly high number of Asian-American girls struggle with body image, trying to fit in to this image of Asian girls all being “stick thin.” By American standards, they are considered perfectly ‘normal,’ but I think more than a fair share of us have heard disparaging remarks from relatives (or even strangers!) about how we could afford to lose some extra pudge.

Actually, I’m actually kind of alarmed by what seems to be the complete lack of education and insight into eating disorders and body image in Asia…
